Going out for New Year’s? What are you Going to Wear?

new-years-eveThe days are winding down on the calendar, which means time for reflection on the year past- and perhaps a focus on getting ready to go out celebrate to ring in the New Year?

While your funds may be long gone in the wake of holiday shopping, getting glam to go out on New Year’s is likely way at the bottom of the list; the answer is not necessarily to stay home. A little creativity can go a long way towards getting you out the door and looking fabulous.

Go Casual

While New Year’s Eve has long had a tradition of being shiny- from the décor, to the noisemakers, hats, horns and confetti ,to the clothes partygoers wear themselves, there is no hard and fast rule that says that you have to get dressed up at all.

If going out is on your to-do list, but getting dolled up is beyond the budget, opt out altogether of gala-type events and attend a casual function – where favourite jeans are the order of the day. A celebration is a celebration even if you’re in denim instead of nylons.

Double Your Wardrobe

Who says that you have to go shopping at the mall? Hit up your BFF’s and see if they have anything suitable that would fit the bill.

Don’t just stop at dresses and sweaters either; look for matching shoes, belts and accessories that your friends would be willing to lend out to complete your borrowed outfit.

Dive through Your Closet

Think you have nothing to wear? Think again! Go through your cupboard top to bottom and see what you have to work with. This outfit is not going to come ready made out of your closet, but will require a little creative thinking and fashionable construction.

Pull out basics, like straight skirts, flashy tops or tanks or even the all-important little black dress that you thought may have already served its time. This is about re-style!

Mix and Match items in similar colour families that you may not have thought of before.

Look at re-purposing some items, like dress shorts from the summer that could be worn over nylons, or blazers that could function out of their matching set.

Take a basic skirt or top and add applique jewels or sequins. Take a shirt dress and add a shiny, chunky belt that will re-focus the idea and the look of the outfit.

Accesorize!

Accessories are like the fashion motor that move nearly every outfit from day to night. The key for New Year’s Eve accessories is to be as shiny as the event itself.

Concentrate on flashy earrings or layered necklaces and bracelets. A couple of bangle-cuff bracelets crusted in rhinestones or some other costume jewellery bijoux add panache and make a statement.

Brooches are not for your grandmother either. Add visual interest to a top by pinning a sparkly brooch. Brooches are cool, and often become conversation pieces.

Flashy cosmetics

One of the often over-looked aspects of your “going-out” outfit is already present- your hair and your face!

Take extra time with your hair, trying a new up-do with shiny bobbles to hold it in place. Try adding curls or straightening your hair, depending on how you normally wear it out.

As for makeup, splurge a little to be bold to ring in the New Year. Hit the local pharmacy or discount store to try a new shade of eye shadow, blush or lipstick. Try different eye techniques, like bold mascara or smokey eyes. It is a special occasion after all!

Complete the going-out- outfit with discrete amount of glitter on your face, neck and shoulders.
